Sir William Edgar, President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (ImechE), visited DCU on Friday 26 November 2004 to present a lecture entitled `Engineering: the depths to the heights'. The mechanical division of the IEI and IMechE (ROI branch) invite the President each year to Ireland to take part in the annual dinner event and present a lecture. This event is normally held in the IEI headquarters but this year, for the first time, the event was held DCU.

During this event, Patrick Kane was presented with an award for graduating with a first from the B. Eng. Mechatronic Engineering degree this November. He was also first in his class.

Sir William spoke of his vast manufacturing knowledge, specifically relating his experience in the Aerospace and oil exploration industries. He also spoke about the future of Engineering and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

The IEI President, Paddy Caffrey, IEI Registrar, Kevin Kernan, and the Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Saleem Hashmi were present at the dinner. The Mechanical division committee of the IEI and IMechE (ROI branch) and industrial representatives also attended the event.
