International Day, 24 March'
7 April 2003

On Monday, 24 March the true colour and texture of cultural diversity at DCU was brought to the fore. Students from Bangladesh, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Ireland, Turkey and Iran displayed their wares and presented a range of artefacts from their home countries. Stands such as Fair Trade, Anti-Racism and The Intercultural Workplace promoted understanding for cultural differences and brought home the message that Dublin City University is a place where diversity and interculturalism is promoted and respected.
The day started with a 'Moment of Prayer for Friendship Amongst Peoples' in the Interfaith Centre and this Moment set the atmosphere for the rest of the day, which was characterised by a truly 'friendly' mix of nationalities and cultures. Anyone who entered the Hub during the day was given a touch of what Ireland is slowly but surely becoming - a multicultural society. The International Bazaar was a huge success, which can only be attributed to the enormous effort of both Irish and International students.
Following the Bazaar many students headed upstairs to the Ceili, where Caoimhghin O'Croidheain, SALIS, managed to make the Ceili sets appear quite effortless.
The day was complete when Ameson, a Chinese cultural organisation, staged a wonderful display of traditional Chinese music, dance and song in the Helix. For those who still had energy after the long and varied day, students organised an International Quiz followed by a Party in the 'Old Bar', a venue which is traditionally quiet on a Monday evening.
The day was a wonderful success. Internationalisation is alive and well at DCU! I would like to thank everyone for their involvement on the Day and prior to the event. It was an absolute joy to work with people who share a vision of promoting cultural diversity and understanding in DCU. I look forward to our next event.
