3 August 2004

Under the auspices of the new University Energy Management Bureau, DCU is working together with three Dublin-based colleges in an effort to reduce the annual energy consumption in 30 key buildings by 10% over three years. The other participating institutions are – Dublin Institute of Technology, Trinity College Dublin and University College. Savings in energy costs at the end of year three are projected at over 315,000 per annum, equivalent to 3,230 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

In order to facilitate the monitoring of performance and the identification of wastage, each building’s electricity and gas current and historical usage is available on the internet for viewing by facilities staff, students and the general public. The monitoring system and further information on the e3 initiative may be accessed at www.e3.ie, where energy usage by all four institutions can be viewed.

DCU’s energy consumption can be viewed at the following url: http://bms.dcu.ie/

A series of energy audits will be undertaken at each university campus to analyse how energy is currently consumed in each building, to identify energy saving measure, and to set targets for future performance. It is important to be aware of the importance of improving housekeeping practices such as switching off lights and computers when not required and closing windows when ventilation is not required.
