DCU student wins IBM global fellowship award
14 April 2003

DCU student of Electronic Engineering, Emira Dautbegovic, was awarded IBM's annual global fellowship on the 11 April 2003.Postgraduate students are nominated for the award from all over the world, and this is the first time that it has gone to a student in an Irish university.
The $15,000 fellowship is awarded annually to a postgraduate student of exceptional technical talent, and may be renewed for up to three years. All nominations are submitted to IBM Research Headquarters who made three awards this year.
The engineering manager of IBM Dublin, Michael Geraghty, put in a case for supporting the fellowship application of Emira on the basis that her research is directly relevant to the work of IBM in Ireland.
Emira Dautbegovic is carrying out her PhD research under the supervision of Dr Marissa Condon in the School of Electronic Engineering at Dublin City University. Her research is concerned with the development of algorithms for high-speed/high-frequency transient simulation of complex electronic circuits.
The last decade has seen an unprecedented growth in wireless and personal communications and is a trend that will continue to be a feature of modern life. This global phenomenon has necessitated the development of new and advanced Computer Aided Design tools for communication system designers. According to Dr Condon, "the increasing focus on communications technology has resulted in market pressure for a new approach to these design tools which will result shorter product development cycles. There is an urgent need for new techniques which can simulate the behaviour of the complicated communications systems efficiently, accurately and effectively".
Michael Daly, Country General Manager, IBM said, "IBM has been involved for a number of years in supporting the Post Graduate Research programme in DCU and this is a tremendous achievement by Emira when you consider she has competed against the best in the world and won. It also further endorses both the quality and business relevance of the research being carried out in DCU."
