Building the Architects of Tomorrow
19 July 2002

model bridge

CTYI have been encouraging the 'architect of tomorrow' in their latest session with 12 - 16 year olds. The architecture class has built model bridges to scale using Lollipop sticks and other available materials; these bridges would hold their architectural integrity if built to scale.

Currently two of the bridges around Dublin which are under construction, Blackhall Place and the East Link Bridge, were contracted to Spanish designers.

Richard Mullen, the architecture lecture with CTYI, pointed out that given architecture is playing such an important role in Ireland at the moment, it is important that we can produce our own architects who can play an active role in shaping our city.

The building in CTYI does not stop here. They are also running an engineering course were the emphasis is on functionality as opposed to design.

Check back next week to see the two bridges and compare the different approaches.
