Royal Irish Academy award for Richard O'Kennedy

Professor Richard O'Kennedy has received the Royal Irish Academy Biochemistry Award for 2001 in recognition of his contribution to biochemical research in the last decade. In honour of the occasion, a specially designed silver medallion was presented to Richard at a ceremony in the Royal Irish Academy on Tuesday 26 February 2002. Schering Plough sponsored the award.
The focus of his research is antibody production and applications, biosensors, immunoanalysis and drug analysis/metabolism with special reference to coumarin-based molecules.
Since Richard's appointment as a lecturer in biochemistry at DCU in 1985, he has had an extremely prolific career. He has authored over one hundred peer-reviewed papers, plus book chapters, books and reviews. A number of ideas arising from his research have also been commercialised.
He has acted as a referee for many international journals and as a grant assessor for national, UK, US and EU bodies, has graduated over 30 M.Sc./PhD students and has given presentations on his research throughout the world.
Currently, he is Vice President of the London International Youth Science Forum, Organiser of the Irish Biology Olympiad, Member of the Science Committee, Royal Dublin Society and Secretary, National Committee for Biochemistry, Royal Irish Academy.
