This year, 40 students of the M.Sc. in Electronic Commerce 2002/3 class, presented their practicum projects in a series of presentations on 27 August 2003. The practicum projects are team-based and are carried out during the Summer period by groups of students on the course, who build a prototype e-commerce system to solve a real-world problem or to exploit a real-world opportunity. These practicum projects often attract the attention of industry or investors, and many students use them as a basis for going out on their own and setting up their own companies. This year's prize for best all-round practicum went to Niamh Fahy, Louise Doyle, Enrique Costoya Blasco and Cenk Kuzucu for their practicum entitled "Commercial Applications of CEOLAIRE Technology". In this work the students took the work of post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Thomas Sodring, who has developed a music retrieval system based on melody retrieval at DCU, and who has developed a prototype system for this to perform mobile phone ring-tone retrieval. The practicum project explored the commercial applications of this system and developed an application for a Nokia mobile handset to allow melody-based retrieval of a ring-tone.
