Centre for International Studies receives support from Development Cooperation Ireland
4 May 2004

Dr John Doyle and Dr Eileen Connolly in the Centre for International Studies in the School of Law and Government at DCU have been awarded a grant of €150,000, from Development Cooperation Ireland. (http://www.dcu.ie/~cis). The grant will support a programme of 'development education' in DCU over the next three years by funding two 'internship' positions in the Centre for International Studies and by providing financial support for a programme of guest speakers and seminars.
The grant will also provide students on a wide range of programmes in DCU with an opportunity to explore key issues related to global development. Poverty, international trade, wider North-South relations and the role of international businesses are just some of the areas which can be examined in greater detail. This will not only include students on DCU's MA programmes in International Relations and Globalisation and the new BA programme in International Relations but will also give students taking modules delivered by the School of Law and Government across a range of programmes and Faculties access to shorter inputs dealing with development issues as they relate to business, journalists, European Studies etc.
The Centre will also be in a position to build on its popular on-line resources in development education, which are freely available on the internet and used by students and others interested in development issues well beyond DCU. http://www.dcu.ie/~cis/development.htm
The internships will allow the Centre for International Studies to play a key part in building expertise in development education and research in Ireland. As part of the Irish Government's committment to almost double development cooperation assistance there is a clear need for additional Irish expertise in this area and also a need to explain and discuss such a significant level of public spending. The Centre for International Studies will play a key role in developing Ireland's research and education capacity in this area and these internships will increase the opportunities for interested students to pursue PhD research within the School of Law and Government, adding greatly to the level of expertise in development nationally.
