SALIS achieves further grant success
19 December 2002

Francoise Blin and Fernando Prieto, lecturers in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, have also been successful in their application for funding from the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Under the small grant scheme Francoise Blin of SALIS has been awarded a grant towards the organisation of an international research workshop on computer assisted language learning. She will be working in collaboration with Professor Michael Levy of School of Languages and Linguistics, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, Dr Angela Chambers and Liam Murray, Centre of Applied Language Centre, University Limerick.

It is envisaged that approximately forty researchers will take part in the workshop, half of them from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The workshop will be held in September 2003 prior to the EUROCALL 2003 conference hosted by the University of Limerick. The outcomes of the workshop will be disseminated via an article submitted to international journals in the field (e.g. ReCALL, CALL, etc.) and via a pilot web site reporting on the discussions held during the workshop.

Fernando Prieto has received a small grant awards towards the preparation of a monograph on European press discourses on immigration, which will be published next summer. This will entail updating and expanding the research for his doctoral thesis, enhancing its European dimension and strenthening the national and international links already established in the area of Critical Discourse Analysis. His monograph will be the first of its kind (comparative and diachronic study within the area of CDA) published from Ireland, and this innovativeness is one of the reasons why it is being supported by the IRCHSS.
