Sigerson Cup
DCU Gaelic Footballers Sigerson Cup Defeat
Tom O Donnell
DCU bowed out of the Sigerson Cup at the quarter-final stage when beaten by the hosts and eventual winners of the competition, Sligo IT. It was the University's first time contesting this stage of the Sigerson Cup. However a physically stronger and mobile Sligo team put paid to DCU's further progress. The Sligo team was able to call on the vast experience on many senior inter county players. In the back line, Mayo sewnior Aidan Higgins was in command while up front Roscommon's Gerry Lohan and Rory Gallagher from Fermanagh were impressive.
Nevertheless, DCU players acquitted themselves well, especially in the second half. The introduction of Niall Browne (Kildare) gave the team greater impetus. In the back-line, captain Shane Carroll (Longford), Patrick Stephens (Galway) and Dublin player, Bryan Cullen, curbed numerous threats from the Sligo forwards. Up front, Niall Magennis (Monaghan) made life difficult for the Sligo defence. Although the Sligo lead was reduced to three points early in the second half, DCU was unable to capitalise on the many scoring chances that were created and Sligo eventually ran out winners on a score-line of 2-8 to 1-3.
This experience will stand to the DCU players and it is hoped that further progress will be made in inter-varsity competition. Well done to all the players and the management team of Dr Niall Moyna and Dermot Morris.
