DCU reach the Ryan Cup semi-final
DCU's extra special show
DCU - 0-9 Carlow IT - 0-8(after extra time)
Meath's Fergus McMahon struck late into extra-time to seal a victory that sees DCU progress to the Ryan Cup SH semi-final in atrocious conditions at Santry yesterday.
A heavy pitch and driving rain and wind conspired against skilful hurling, but both teams still managed to produce an absorbing contest.
Carlow IT trailed by a single piont at half time, but within two minutes of the restart had taken the lead with two quick fire points. Playing against the elements, DCU dug in grittily to stay in touch. In fact, as the half progressed DCU began to exert the greater influence on proceedings and had the better chances to win the match in normal time at the end of which both sides were deadlocked 0-7 each.
The honours were finally won in extra-time by points from McMahon and impressive substitute Willie Doran against a solitary reply from Carlow IT's Paul Buggy.
