13 November 2003

Eamon Loughnane, a fourth year financial & actuarial mathematics student was presented with the Hamilton Prize in Mathematics to the value of €1,000 at an award ceremony at the Royal Irish Academy (RIA) in October. The awards are made possible by sponsorship from DePha Bank and provide nine prizes annually to students of mathematics in each of the nine Irish universities over a five-year period.
Each university's mathematics department was invited to nominate its best student in the penultimate year of undergraduate studies. DCU's nomination criterion was based on the highest overall score over six mathematics modules. Based on this criterion, Eamon Loughnane achieved the highest score and was nominated.
The RIA is Ireland's academy for the sciences and humanities and recognises achievements in learning, promotes research programmes and advises on issues of major concern in the fields of science, technology and culture.
