DCU Disability Awareness week
26th - 29th of October
Angel Day is traditionally the Irish Wheelchair Association`s National Fundraising Day. This year Angel Day has been developed into a nationwide Education Disability Awareness & Angel Schools and Colleges campaign - EDAASC. The positive atmosphere in DCU and open-mindedness of its students and staff is a wonderful environment for the Angel Disability Awareness Campaign to take place. The week is focused on capturing the imagination of students bringing to their attention the whole issue of disability in a very positive way.
Yvonne Crotty, director and brainchild of EDAASC (also a DCU lecturer and student!) said "IWA are delighted with the positive response and great energy generated by everybody within the college - from the President, Ferdinand von Prondzynski, to the disability officer, BrendaHopkins, in the sports complex, Students Union, clubs & societies and indeed each and every student who is taking the time to find out what the week is about. It is inspiring to see clubs such as Fotosoc undertaking to record the week in pictures and the Redbrick society who are at the ready to construct a web page for www.edaasc.com in an effort to document DCUs involvement. "
There are 3 main sections to the week
- Disability Awareness Workshop
- Sports Blitz
- Angel Day
Disability Awareness Workshop
Representatives from each class will be invited to this workshop. The aim is to experience the challenges facing people with disabilities everyday, through activities and games. Therefore before the representatives receive their disability pack and boxes of angels, they will have a greater understanding with hands on experience of disability.
Sports Day
The main focus of the day is to bring together athletes and interested parties to appreciate sports from the perspective of a wheelchair. Clubs and Socs representatives will form teams that will be integrated with experienced wheelchair users. This will mean all teams have an equal chance of winning, it also means that the perception that someone with a disability is dependent on someone without a disability is changed. There will also be a few familiar faces taking part with Paralympic, Olympic and other sports faces taking part.
Angel Ball
This promises to be the Ball of the year. A musical extravaganza provided by 20th Century Gold, PenfoldDM, The Draft, The New Black and guests. Its fancy dress so make sure you come prepared and there will be a prize for the best dressed angel on the night as well as lots of other spot prizes. Tickets are available at the Kiosk.
