Dr Brett Paull has been awarded the Silver Medal of the Analytical Division of the Royal Society of Chemistry 2004. The medal is awarded once a year to the most promising analytical chemist in the Republic of Ireland or United Kingdom who is 35 or under. The award is the most prestigious prize for analytical chemists made by the Royal Society of Chemistry. Professor Malcolm Smyth, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Health, was awarded the Gold Medal in 1999 in recognition of the excellence of his research over his career.

DCU can now boast that it has both a silver and a gold medallist amongst its ranks, which is an achievement won by few universities.

The citation for Dr Paul reads: "Distinguished for his innovative research in separation science, particularly ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. His work includes trace elemental analysis and speciation, on-site environmental monitoring, micro-scale separation and flow injection systems, fast liquid chromatography, chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry and the simultaneous determination of anions and cations".
