'Women in Prison' photographic exhibition by Christina Quinlan
26 June 2003

Christina Quinlan, a lecturer in the School of Communications, opened her photographic exhibition entitled 'Women in Prison' in The Gallery in The Helix on Monday 9 June 2003. This audio-visual exhibition, which will run until the 30 June, is the product of a spatial analysis of women's experiences of imprisonment in Ireland.

The photographs in this exhibition form a visual narrative of women's prison space in Ireland. The audio, which comprised of ambient prison sounds and female prisoner dialogue, added a further dimension to the audiences' comprehension of the prison experience.

Christina's representation of this element of the women's prison experiences is related to her perception of that experience and it is founded in the powerful representations of these women created by them in their personal prison space. The photographs were taken over the last two years in The Dochas Centre at Mountjoy Prison and in Limerick Prison, the only female prisons in the Republic of Ireland.
