DCU has just announced the appointment of Professor Dermot Diamond to the position of Vice-President for Research, a new post created to reflect the emphasis DCU places on research. According to its Strategic Plan DCU aims to 'to foster creativity and to spearhead change for the benefit of society'.
'DCU, in the development of its selected strategic priorities during the planning period, will be a radical and innovative university. It will be strongly research led, and its focused research strategy, built around world class specialisms, will also help to assure excellence in teaching and learning.'
Leading change, STRATEGIC PLAN 2001-2002
Dermot has received recognition both at home and aboard for his research in chemistry. On 1 July Queen's University, Belfast, awarded him a DSc and on 12 July Dermot received the 2002 Chemical Sensors Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, London. This is the first year of the award and recognises Dermot's outstanding contribution to chemical sensor research.
'I am certain that Dermot will provide strong leadership for DCU as we move forward to exploit recent successes', in the words of Prof Ferdinand von Prondzynski, DCU president.
