Launch of joint Graduate Certificate in Ethics (Health Care)

Mater Dei Institute (MDI), the Institute of Ethics and the School of Nursing & Human Sciences at DCU are pleased to announce a new Graduate Certificate in Ethics (Health Care). This interdisciplinary course provides participants with knowledge, skills and competencies in the specialised area of Health Care Ethics. The programme is specifically targeted towards nursing and medical professionals and other allied health care practitioners as well as those who sit on research ethics committees and clinical ethics committees. The Graduate Certificate in Ethics (Health Care) is offered on a part-time basis over one year.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Dr Alan Kearns of MDI said: “I am delighted that this new specialism in health care ethics has been launched in conjunction with the Institute of Ethics and the School of Nursing and Human Sciences in DCU. Health care in Ireland is changing rapidly. How health care should be delivered and accessed pose important ethical questions for service providers, users and citizens. Ethical issues regarding confidentiality, consent, privacy, allocation of resources, capacity for decision-making, benefits and harms of treatment and care at the end of life, to mention but a few, emerge daily in the hustle and bustle of hospital life. In addition, the continuous breakthroughs and advancements in medicine, science and technology also pose new ethical challenges. The goal of the new Graduate Certificate in Ethics (Health Care) is therefore to provide participants with knowledge, skills and competencies to respond to such ethical questions, issues and challenges in the complex domain of health care.”
