DCU re-appoints Dr Martin McAleese as Chancellor

Dublin City University has announced the re-appointment of Dr Martin McAleese as Chancellor of the University for a second 5-year term.

As Chancellor, Dr McAleese works closely with DCU Governing Authority to ensure good governance, integrity and accountability across the University, exercising oversight of the university’s strategic direction, approving the strategic plan and ensuring its successful implementation.  

Professor Brian MacCraith, President of DCU said,

“We are delighted that Dr McAleese has agreed to remain for a second term as Chancellor of the University.  During a time of transformation for the university, particularly during incorporation with St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, Mater Dei Institute of Education and the Church of Ireland College of Education, his advice and leadership have been invaluable and we are very fortunate to retain his guiding influence as DCU continues to develop and grow.”  

The Governing Authority consists of thirty one members, both internal and external to the University, who serve a five year term.  The Authority meets at least six times per year and has a number of sub-committees (Audit, Risk, Strategic Finance, and Nominations and Governance) in place to assist it in the performance of its functions.

The following were nominated to membership of the Governing Authority by the Minister for Education and Skills:

  • Pat Gilroy, Irish Managing Director, Designer Group and former Dublin Gaelic football player and manager

  • Bernie Gray, Director of Business in the Community, Member of the Accountability Board of the Civil Service, Member of the RCSI Audit Committee,

  • Brid Horan, Chairman of the Board of Ireland Smart Ageing Exchange and former Deputy Chief Executive, ESB

  • John Power, CEO Touchtech Payments and Master Franchisee, Roche Bobois Ireland
