DCU engineering students shine at ESB Inter-College Challenge

A team of third year Engineering students from Dublin City University were runners up in the ESB Inter-College Challenge which took place at the Irish Management Institute.

Daraigh Eglington O' Toole, Dylan Vincent Do Couto, Conor Patrick Meyler and Christopher Gerard Carragher (pictured) took part in this year's event which aims to test the engineering, financial and team working skills of participants.

All four received an offer of a work placement with ESB/ESB International.

The Inter-College Challenge event is designed to encourage teams to apply their knowledge to develop innovative, creative and commercially focused solutions to real life challenges.

The winning team is also offered placements within ESB and sponsored to represent their college at the Engineering and Commerce Case Competition in Montreal.

In total, thirty-six students from nine colleges around the country participated in the competition which took place earlier in November (Thursday, Nov 2nd, Friday, Nov 3rd) .

For the event challenge, each college had to act as a consulting team, engaged by ESB, to recommend current or emerging eHeat and eTransport technologies applicable to the energy market.

Teams had to undertake research, design, financial analysis and marketing activities to convince ESB to go ahead with their recommendations.

The teams were allocated eight hours to research and design a solution to the task, after which they pitched their idea to an expert panel of judges.
