DCU launches DCU Press, the first open access university press in Ireland

Dublin City University is pleased to announce the launch of DCU Press, Ireland’s first open access university press.

Open Access is an international movement that allows free public access to university research and other outputs that would traditionally have been behind paywalls and subscriptions.

DCU Press, Ireland's first Open Access university press, is dedicated to publishing books on research in all fields where the print version is available for purchase and the high-quality digital eBook is freely available to anyone in the world at no cost.

DCU Press is a joint initiative between DCU’s Office of the Vice President of Research & Innovation and DCU Libraries.

On 7th June 2018, the European Commission adopted Horizon Europe. Within its mission lies a profound shift in research communications toward openness – the principle of 'open science' will become the modus operandi of Horizon Europe, requiring open access to publications and data. This will assist market uptake and increase the innovation potential of results generated by EU funding.’

In addition to publishing standard sales monographs in all disciplines and modeling a journals platform, DCU Press is a leading innovation in line with the ambitions of Horizon Europe. DCU has a strong legacy in research communication and, as Ireland’s first open access university publisher, DCU Press builds on the University’s notable international reputation in this field.

Christopher Pressler, University Librarian at DCU, states: DCU Press is a unique partnership in Irish universities between libraries, research offices and faculties. It is a carefully considered response to change and a progression of the University’s heritage of innovation in open scholarship. Supported by a strong alliance and sound principles, Ireland’s first open access university press will ensure that Dublin City University continues to be at the vanguard of scholarly transformation. DCU has its own tradition of openness, being a designated University of Sanctuary, an Age-Friendly University and having the largest access scholarship programmes in the country. DCU Press builds on our reputation for transformation and enterprise and puts the University at the forefront of new ways for universities to engage with the public."
