DCU Mercy become Women's Super League Champions

DCU Mercy became the 2020 Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League champions beating Galway’s Maree Basketball Club by 81-58 points on Sunday, March 1st.

The Women’s Super League is the top national women’s basketball league in the country.

The DCU Mercy team had previously been beaten by Galway’s Maree team and as they headed towards the penultimate game of the season they knew they would have to give their all in order to win.

Early into the first half, Maree took over the game but DCU fought back bringing the score to a 31-31 draw by half time.

A tense and thrilling last quarter saw DCU push for the lead, finishing the last game of the league the Women’s Super League Champions.

Top scorers from the game included Meredith Burkhall with 32 points, Sarah Woods with 21 points and Rachel Hujidens with 12 points.

There have been a number of great sporting achievements in DCU so far this year.

In January, DCU claimed their fifth Sigerson Cup title with an impressive 0-14 to 0-7 win over IT Carlow in the final at DCU Sportsgrounds.

And last month saw DCU make history as they won their first-ever Collingwood Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out, beating Ulster University 4-1 on spot kicks at Dalymount Park.

DCU just missed out on the final of the Fitzgibbon Cup after losing to UCC in the semi-final which finished 0-18 to 0-17

DCU Mercy winning the Women’s Super League comes as DCU celebrates our fortieth anniversary.
