press releases 2001

dublin city university arts week

DCU Arts Week brings to campus great craic, provocative drama, stand up comedy, street theatre, music ranging from Fleadh Cowboys to Finghin Collins and more.

On Tuesday evening the DCU dramsoc presents "Turning the other cheek" - short sharp and consistently funny, this play could be described as "Meet the parents" with an edge.

On Wednesday (from 11.30am) the brilliant Belfast Circus will stumble, or seem to stumble, their way through escapology, slack wire walking and other death defying feats in a combination of vibrant street theatre with traditional circus skills.

Niamh Murray, Ireland's finest soprano, performs at lunch time and while the Fringe hosts Charlie Hughes in the intriguing "Iscariot - another side of the story" followed by Ned Dennehy in Ian McEwan's enthralling "Butterflies", over at the university's Larkin Theatre The Vogler String Quartet are a "don't miss".

On Thursday, past DCU writer in residence Marina Carr will give a reading at 7.30pm. Marina is Ireland's foremost female playwright and her work includes Low in the Dark, Ullaloo, The Deer's Surrender, The Mai (Dublin Theatre Festival Best New Play 1994) and the highly commended By the Bog of Cats. Marina was recently awarded the esteemed EM Forster Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and her work has been performed in Europe and across the US.

For those who want the craic, the students themselves will give it welly on Thursday night in "Stars in their eyes". Guaranteed to split a few sides - and show not just a small portion of talent.

Back to the student bar on Friday at lunchtime sees Daniel Jean Renaud aka Daniel the Kingsnake. A Frenchman based in London who cut his musical teeth in San Francisco in the 80s, Daniel's favourite guitar is called Nadine, ever since Chuck Berry borrowed it at a gig in Downtown San Francisco. His performances at the Marathon in London have become legendary and have been attended by the likes of Oasis and Jarvis Cocker.
