exam results

Gone are the days when students queued 3-deep around the noticeboards, waiting to catch their name or student number on the exam results sheet which the university administrator held aloft in one hand, with the requisite thumb tack in the other.

This Thursday (28 June 2001) at 5.00pm, DCU's Information Systems & Services will launch a further innovation by providing exam results on-line via web-enabled (WAP) mobile phones. WAP (wireless application protocol) technology enables users access to information on a variety of handheld wireless devices and the primary make tested by Computer Sevices Department is the Siemens S35i.

Students will be able to log into the DCU website and then select 'Exam Results'. They will key in their student ID number and password and the results will be displayed as a series of screens, one for each course module they have taken.

"We were the first university in Ireland to post exam results up on our website," said Prof Pat Barker, Registrar at DCU. "The mobile phone was an obvious next step. In this pilot, we tested the Siemens S35i and although at this stage we can't guarantee that all other models and makes of phone will have the memory and/or holding capacity to display the exam results, we will monitor student interest with a view to expanding next semester."

Results will also be directly available through the DCU webpages at http://www.dcu.ie, and although the exam results will still be posted up on noticeboards on campus, there is unlikely to be any need for crowd control.
