three world premières at farewell concert for colin mawby, founder of national chamber choir
Three new compositions by composers Colin Mawby and Alfred Fisher will be premiered at a farewell concert for Colin Mawby to be held in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square on 6 December.
Colin Mawby, founder and artistic director of the National Chamber Choir for the last eleven years, has written two pieces for the concert, 'Laudate Pueri Dominum' and 'Nine Marian Anthems', which are to be published in America as well as in Ireland
According to Colin Mawby, "Music either speaks to you or it doesn't. but I feel sure that these anthems will 'speak' to a lot of listeners when they are aired for the first time".
Internationally renowned and highly regarded composer, Alfred Fisher, is likewise confident about what he terms his "personal piece" - 'Speak Love'. For the first time ever, he has translated a text by Petrarch and set it to music. This work is his farewell gift to Colin Mawby and represents a move towards creating music that has greater tonality and which, as he says, "gets under the skin".
Colin Mawby is leaving Ireland to pursue his career in composing. According to Karina Lundstrom, Chief Executive of the National Chamber Choir, he will be missed by all those who have worked with him over the past eleven years.
"Colin is a unique thinker. Having a conversation with him is like taking a line for a walk - you never know where you are going to end up", says Karina. "We will not meet his like again".
The concert takes place in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Parnell Square, at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £6, or with concession £4. For further details call 7005665.
