two university places reserved for sports stars or coaches
The Centre for Sport Science and Health at DCU (Dublin City University) is to reserve two places on its BSc in Sport Science and Health for high quality athletes and coaches who may not qualify for this degree programme under the normal entry points system.
The normal entry level for Sport Science and Health is 450 points and the degree, which covers sport, exercise and physical activity from a scientific perspective, is in high demand.
"We regularly come across athletes who, for various reasons, including training commitments, have the ability to study a degree programme but don't achieve the very high grades required for entry to the Sport Science and Health programme." Explained Professor Malcolm Smyth, head of the Centre, "We decided to reserve two places for individuals who have achieved a very high level of sporting performance, either as athletes or coaches and who are committed to continuing to develop their sporting careers in conjunction with their academic careers."
"We believe that these students will bring significant practical experience and enthusiasm which will in turn benefit other students on the programme." Said Professor Smyth.
These places are additional to the normal DCU sports scholarships and the students may be eligible for both. There is no restriction on the particular sport pursued by the students. Candidates interested in these reserved places apply directly to DCU and in addition to a portfolio of achievement they will be required to meet the University's minimum entry requirements and attend an interview.
