Strategic Research Collaborations: Building Your Network and Navigating Partnerships
In today’s global research landscape, collaboration is no longer optional—it is the engine of discovery and a cornerstone of a successful academic career. However, for early career researchers, the transition from 'contributor' to 'collaborator' brings unique challenges: from identifying the right partners and managing cross-disciplinary communication to navigating authorship and power dynamics.
This panel discussion moves beyond the basics of planning. We bring together experienced DCU researchers and industry partners to share 'behind-the-scenes' insights on how to build a collaborative portfolio that enhances your research profile. Whether you are looking to engage with international consortia, local industry, or community partners, this session will provide the practical strategies needed to establish, manage, and sustain high-impact research relationships.
In this discussion, we will cover some of the following topic areas:
Finding the 'Right' Fit. How to identify partners (academic and non-academic) who align with your values and long-term career goals, rather than just chasing a single grant.
Navigating Power & Authorship. Managing the delicate balance of working with senior PIs, ensuring fair credit, and setting expectations early through "collaboration agreements."
The Interdisciplinary Language. Strategies for communicating your niche expertise to partners in different fields or industries without losing the "essence" of your research.
Leveraging International Networks. Utilizing DCU’s global connections (like the ECIU network) to find low-stakes entry points for international cooperation.
