Academic biography

John White has worked as a primary school teacher, primary school principal, primary school inspector and is now working in the School of Policy and Practice.  He has worked as a coordinator and Director of Professional Placement and now works as Director of the DCU Changemaker Schools Network. He also works on undergraduate and post-graduate programs in the Institute of Education.  His interests include exploring the value of the DCU Changemaker Schools Network (DCU CSN), the nonverbal origins of language, classroom communication, nonverbal communication, creativity, arts-based research, leadership, embodied cognition, Science and Mathematics education.

Research interests

I have been involved in research in primary schools in the following fields: teaching skills, nonverbal communication, peer appraisal, leadership, well-being, embodied cognition, creativity and the use of arts-based methods in educational research.

My current research work centres on the following:

Exploring the value of the DCU Changemaker Schools Network with a particular focus on leadership, pedagogy, creativity, empathy, leadership, teamwork, student voice, culture and professional learning communities.Examining the nonverbal origins of language through the lenses of evolution, neuroscience and language acquisition theory. Examining the value and use of embodied cognition as a method for delivering science education in Irish primary schools.
