General Talks on College Life
Choosing a university means more than just finding
out about courses. It is also important to get a
feel for college life, not just at DCU, but at any
university. For this reason, DCU open day will
provide you with the opportunity to attend a series
of general talks, which are geared towards giving
you a real insight into university life:
How to make the most of your time at college
By attending this motivational presentation by James Sweetman, a Business and Personal Coach, you will receive some great tips for making studying easier. You will also discover the simple steps to follow that will enable you to make the most of your college experience. The talk will cover effective learning strategies, for example, how body language and how people sit when studying/listening to a teacher impacts on the information they are absorbing. Techniques and hints for reading and absorbing information are also shared.

The Disability Service at Dublin City University
DCU provides a
very comprehensive set of supports for students with
disability and its aim is to ensure that students
with a disability are integrated into every aspect
of campus life.
Pat Hoey, Senior Disability Officer at DCU, will
deliver this presentation, which will deal with
topics such as the following:

How do I get a place in college?

Is there specific funding
available for students with disabilities?

What supports are available when
I come to college?
Connected learning at DCU: An
e-learning showcase
This session will showcase some of the innovative
technology-based teaching and learning approaches in
use at the University. DCU's e-learning resources
are there to help students get the most of your
learning experience, whether you are experienced
with technology, or an absolute beginner!

The "Moodle"
web-based learning system will be demonstrated,
showing how it is used to
provide students with links to resources and
activities such as lecture notes, video clips,
online journals, quizzes, chat rooms and group
discussion forums. Students can also submit
assignments online and 'talk' to their lecturers
directly on any aspect of their course. Some
examples of how new technologies such as MP3 and MP4
are being deployed in learning will be showcased.

Cost of University
Catherine Roche of Student Support & Development will address
financial matters that you need to take into
consideration from the time you apply to the CAO to
October of your first year in college. This talk will cover
living expenses, accommodation, Higher Education
Grant Scheme, Back to Education Allowance, College
Fees and Student Financial Assistance Service.
Clubs & Societies - Enhancing your college
experience
At
this talk, students will get an introduction to the
wide and varied range of clubs and societies on
offer at DCU. Clubs and Societies are the bedrock of
a student's active involvement in campus life and
getting involved will enhance your university
experiences, giving you the opportunity to develop
existing skills, try something new, while also
providing a lively social life.
Also, on the day, Clubs such as Tae-Kwon-Do, Canoe,
Women-Soccer, Rugby & American Football and
Societies such as Drama, Music, Dance and Style will
be present throughout the campus showcasing their
activities. |
