General Talks on College Life

Choosing a university means more than just finding out about courses. It is also important to get a feel for college life, not just at DCU, but at any university. For this reason, DCU open day will provide you with the opportunity to attend a series of general talks, which are geared towards giving you a real insight into university life:

How to make the most of your time at college

By attending this motivational presentation by James Sweetman, a Business and Personal Coach, you will receive some great tips for making studying easier. You will also discover the simple steps to follow that will enable you to make the most of your college experience. The talk will cover effective learning strategies, for example, how body language and how people sit when studying/listening to a teacher impacts on the information they are absorbing. • What supports are available when I come to college?

Connected learning at DCU: An e-learning showcase

This session will showcase some of the innovative technology-based teaching and learning approaches in use at the University. DCU's e-learning resources are there to help students get the most of your learning experience, whether you are experienced with technology, or an absolute beginner!

The "Moodle" web-based learning system will be demonstrated, showing how it is used to provide students with links to resources and activities such as lecture notes, video clips, online journals, quizzes, chat rooms and group discussion forums. Students can also submit assignments online and 'talk' to their lecturers directly on any aspect of their course. Some examples of how new technologies such as MP3 and MP4 are being deployed in learning will be showcased.

Cost of University

Catherine Roche of Student Support & Development will address financial matters that you need to take into consideration from the time you apply to the CAO to October of your first year in college. This talk will cover living expenses, accommodation, Higher Education Grant Scheme, Back to Education Allowance, College Fees and Student Financial Assistance Service.

Clubs & Societies - Enhancing your college experience

At this talk, students will get an introduction to the wide and varied range of clubs and societies on offer at DCU. Clubs and Societies are the bedrock of a student's active involvement in campus life and getting involved will enhance your university experiences, giving you the opportunity to develop existing skills, try something new, while also providing a lively social life.

Also, on the day, Clubs such as Tae-Kwon-Do, Canoe, Women-Soccer, Rugby & American Football and Societies such as Drama, Music, Dance and Style will be present throughout the campus showcasing their activities.
