Biographical Details

Thomas John Johnston McCloughlin is a native of Northern Ireland having attended Portora Royal School in Co. Fermanagh, he read biological science (Applied Biology) at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown. His postgraduate studies include a masters in education specialising in mathematics education, science education and technology education and PhD in biology education in Trinity College, Dublin.  
Tom entered the teaching profession originally as a TEFL teacher in Dublin and having obtaining a first in his teaching qualification in Trinity College, he embarked on a successful career as a science, maths and technology teacher.  He was assistant principal of Ashbourne Community School and he was appointed science specialist in St. Patrick's College in 2000.  He was laboratory manager in St. Patrick's Campus of DCU. He has maintained a close working relationship with DCU throughout his time at SPD and he emphasises constructivism in his teaching and learning. He has maintained close relationships with primary schools in the Dublin area in which he has participated in teaching programmes.
Tom is a polymath having competencies in biology (teratology), research methods (advanced mathematical methods), technology and instrumentation, languages (Koine and modern Greek), Byzantine history and art, horticulture and agriculture, and marine/aquatic science, which feed into his integration of subjects in the history of science and Byzantine studies.
Tom is married to Sinéad and he is the father of Aoife, Sophia, Muire and Lúc and lives in north county Dublin.
