Academic biography
Dr. John Loonam is an Assistant Professor of Strategy at DCU Business School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in European Studies and a Masters of Business Studies from the University of Limerick. He received his PhD in Business Studies from Trinity College, Dublin. He teaches Strategy at Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and Executive level. He has acted as Programme Chair on a number of Executive programmes, a former Director of the DCU Executive MBA programme, DCUBS Masters in e-Commerce, and is the current chair of the DCUBS Graduate Certificate in Strategic Leadership . Over the past decade he has collaborated with Executive Leaders on strategic projects within multinational, large-scale indigenous, small-to-medium sized enterprises, semi-state, public sector, and not for profit organisations. His research focuses on Strategy & Digital Business. A sample of recent publications includes; Competition in an age of Ecosystems: Implications for Strategy (2025), Exploring Top Management Support for Digital Transformation: A Case Study of a European Financial Services Organisation(2024), Global Value Chains & Digital Platforms: Implications for Strategy (2022), On Digital Transformation: Implications for Strategic Change (2021), Cyber Resiliency for Digital Enterprises: A Strategic Leadership perspective (2020). He is also actively involved in supervising masters and doctoral students (PhDs). He welcomes PhD queries from students interested in the topics of Strategy and Digital Business.
