Academic biography

Eileen Brennan is an Associate Professor in the School of Human Development at the DCU Institute of Education. She joined Dublin City University in 2016, having previously taught philosophy at Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and St Patrick's College Drumcondra. She has a Doctorat de Philosophie (or Ph.D.) from the Institut Catholique de Paris, an Habilitation au Doctorat (equivalent to the British M.Phil. ) also from the Institut Catholique de Paris, and a Master of Arts (M.A.) by Research from University College Dublin.

Her master's thesis supervisor was the Irish philosopher Richard Kearney. Her doctoral thesis supervisor was the Paris-based philosopher Jean Greisch, a leading expert on Heidegger and Ricoeur. Under Professor Greisch's direction she examined Heidegger's early work on the critical, hermeneutical method known as Destruktion. 

She is a humanities translator. Among her translations are Ricoeur's The Just between the Legal and the Good (Bloomsbury); Reflections on a New Ethos for Europe (Sage Journals); and On Translation (Routledge). She also translated Dominique Janicaud's On the Human Condition (Routledge). A former editor of Etudes Ricoeuriennes/Ricoeur Studies and co-editor of Reading Ricoeur through Law (Bloomsbury), she is currently preparing two chapter-length studies on very different aspects of Ricoeur's work for separate but equally exciting international book projects, both of which will be published with Springer.
