Beyond a Single Story - Thank You!

The CHRCE would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation and promotion of the Intercultural Conference that was funded by the Office for the Promotion of Migration Integration in the Department of Justice and Equality.  As part of the project, Strengthening the practice of intercultural education in Primary Schools, the conference brought together multiple stories and perspectives to explore different experiences of and possibilities for intercultural education. We were delighted with the breath and range of work presented which included: academic papers, workshops, a parallel children’s writing conference, panel stories, interactive sessions, graphic recording, inspiring keynote speeches, a dance and spoken word performance, presentations on current initiatives and delicious food. Our conference participants represented different institutions and organisations including Yellow Flag, Migrant Teacher Project, Mother Tongues, Fighting Words, Wave, Our Table, not to mention researchers and academics working in the areas of intercultural education. The perspectives offered by participants often depicted alternative stories of immigration, and belonging.  They touched upon multiple identities and challenged our images of the global south and global north pointing to the importance of anti-racism and global citizenship education. The conference provided many opportunities to challenge the single story that is still present in society today.

Following on the success of the conference, the project will offer Continuing Professional Development opportunities for teachers and schools within Croke Park hours or at other times. If you are interested in the project, please contact malgosia.machowska-kosciak@dcu.ie or by phone at: 01 8842290.
