Invited Presentations on Resilience and Social Inclusion and School Bullying and Violence at University of British Columbia
Dr. Paul Downes, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, School of Human Development, gave two invited presentations during his recent Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.
On April 18th 2017, he gave a 50 minute presentation, ‘Rethinking the Foundations of Resilience and System Change: On the role of educators and systems in and around schools' in promoting social inclusion’ at a roundtable event in the Department of Language & Literacy Education, UBC. Professor Jim Anderson, UBC chaired the session. The respondents to Dr. Downes’ presentation were Dr. Meghan Corella Morales and Ron Darvin from the Department of Language & Literacy Education, UBC.
This presentation was based on aspects of Paul Downes’ books, Access to Education In Europe: A framework and agenda for system change (2014) Dordrecht: Springer and The Primordial Dance: Diametric and Concentric Spaces in the Unconscious World (2012). Oxford/Bern: Peter Lang, as well as his recent journal articles on the areas of resilience and system change.
On April 21st, Paul Downes gave the invited presentation, 'Rethinking Key Issues in School Bullying and Violence Prevention: Strategic Policy Issues from Europe for a Wider International Context?‘ in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education, UBC. Professor Shelley Hymel, Head of the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education, chaired the session. This presentation was based on the recent reports Dr. Downes has led for the European Commission, on school bullying and violence, and structural indicators for inclusive systems.
