Elizabeth Hearst MA in Journalism

Elizabeth Hearst, Graduate of MA in Journalism

Elizabeth Hearst, Graduate of MA in Journalism, reveals that she chose the course in DCU as it is the best in the business, that has a practical learning environment as well as work placement opportunities.

Why I chose the MA in Journalism?

As a child, I loved reading. Every night I would sit and read the newspaper and tune into the Six One News. I was always fascinated by the world around me and had a passion for politics and current affairs.

During the course of my undergraduate degree, I spent time as an editorial intern at the Racing Post, where I began to develop my writing and interview skills. I enjoyed every minute of it, and afterwards found myself researching Masters in Journalism.

DCU stood out to me for several reasons. The facilities, lecturers and alumni of DCU's School of Communications made the decision a no-brainer. I wanted to learn from the best in the business, with a practical learning environment and work placement opportunities.

My postgraduate experience with DCU

I can't speak highly enough of my time at DCU. The lecturers were outstanding, and the small class-size of the MAJ allowed us to really get to know our classmates. I found our lecturers to be very approachable, understanding and passionate about their subject matter.

While studying at DCU, I was afforded the opportunity to travel to Strasbourg to the European Parliament, work alongside reporters from RTÉ at the 2020 General Election and complete a two-month internship with AML Intelligence, where I am now its Digital Editor.

DCU's Masters of Journalism gave me the confidence and education I needed to establish myself in Journalism, and I am so glad I picked DCU.

My advice to incoming students

I would advise incoming students to seize every opportunity that is given to you. Use your time in DCU to explore various elements of Journalism, such as Radio and TV. Get to know your lecturers and classmates and enjoy the experience.

The year at DCU will be over in the blink of an eye, so enjoy every minute of it and immerse yourself.

How the MA in Journalism made a difference to me?

If it weren't for the MAJ and INTRA, I wouldn't be where I am today. I love what I do as Digital Editor of AML Intelligence, and I have gotten to see the company grow from its inception in 2020. DCU gave me the confidence and backing I needed to put myself out there, and it's given me my voice to succeed.
