Public Lecture on Linguistic Rights in Canada and New Brunswick: the quest for substantive equality

FIONTAR, DCU and the Cumann Onórach, King's Inn will host a public lecture with Professor Michel Doucet of Q.C. University of Moncton, New Brunswick on Linguistic Rights in Canada and New Brunswick: the quest for substantive equality. The public lecture will take place in King’s Inns, Henrietta Street on Thursday 9 April 2015 at 6.00pm.

Michel Doucet, Q.C., holds a degree in political science from the Université de Moncton and a law degree (common law program) from the University of Ottawa. He obtained a Master of Law from Cambridge University in England. Legal career: A full professor at the Law School at the Université de Moncton, he teaches in a number of areas, including language rights and remedies. Professor Doucet played a leading role in establishing the Law School’s Centre international de la common law en français. He served as director of the Centre from 1989 to 1995. In this capacity, he participated in numerous missions to Europe and Africa, in addition to organizing many international seminars and symposiums. On assignment in Paris in 1992-1993, he held the position of director of the program to support democratic processes and promote human rights, a program of the Agence internationale de la Francophonie (AIF), the secretariat for the member countries of Francophonie. From 1995 to 2000, Michel Doucet was dean of the Law School at the Université de Moncton. In addition to his teaching position as full professor at the University, Michel Doucet pursues an active law practice essentially in linguistic matters. He is now the Director of the International Observatory of Language Rights. He has pleaded cases before numerous Canadian courts as well as before the Supreme Court of Canada. He was a member of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal from 2001 to 2009 and is an arbitrator in labour arbitration matters. He was awarded the Ordre des francophones d’Amérique by the Government of Québec (1990) and received the Citation for citizenship from the Government of Canada (1991). During the National Symposium on Official Languages, organized by the federal government to mark the tenth anniversary of the Official Languages Act of 1988, the federal Department of Justice presented him with an award of merit in recognition of his commitment to the linguistic and legal duality of Canada. In 1999, the Association des juristes francophones du Nouveau-Brunswick awarded him the mention of Jurist of the year. He is a member of the New Brunswick Bar since 1983 and in 2008 he was appointed Queen Counsel.
