English language requirements for non-native speakers of English

In the case of all applications, evidence MUST be provided of competence in the English language. The list below indicates the minimum standards in the English language, which should be met for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in DCU.

 


 

Temporary measure for 2020 ONLY (response to Covid 19)

For students affected by testing centre closures due to COVID-19, DCU has approved the use of the Duolingo English Test (DET) as a temporary measure for entrants to academic year 2020/21 only. 

Undergraduate Applicants:

Applicants to study an undergraduate programme at DCU will be considered with a minimum DET score of 110  

Postgraduate Applicants:

Applicants to study at postgraduate level for Faculty of Engineering and Computing and Faculty of Science and Health will be considered with a minimum DET score of 110

Applicants to study a Postgraduate programme in the DCU Business School, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science or the Institute of Education will be considered with a minimum DET score of 120

Foundation Applicants:

Two Semester DCU IFP Foundation programme will be considered with a minimum DET score of 90 

One Semester DCU IFP Foundation programme will be considered with a minimum DET score of 100

 

Students using this English Language test to satisfy the conditions of their full offer will have additional supports to ensure success in their DCU programme. As part of orientation students will be assessed and provided with any supplementary English appropriate to address their needs.

Your English language certificate must be awarded within the two years prior to the start date of your DCU programme.

In certain circumstance, results in examinations other than those outlined above may be accepted as proof of competence in English language.  This is the case, for example, for students who have successfully achieved a H7 or D3 grade or higher in an English examination which is deemed by DCU to be the equivalent of GCE A-Level examinations and non-native speakers of English who have completed their education through the medium of English in a native English speaking country.  Please include the details of any English language examinations and proof of successful completion when applying to DCU.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Science - School of Communications

In the case of all applications, evidence MUST be provided of competence in the English Language. The list below indicates the minimum standards in the  English language, which should be met for entry to the postgraduate taught programmes offered by the School of Communications at Dublin City University.
