Study Abroad (Humanities and Social Sciences) (HMSAOO, HMSAX)
Single Module Registration (SMPHSS)
Marks and Standards apply. Students do not progress in the normal sense when registered as HMSAOO, HMSAX or SMPHSS.
BA in Contemporary Culture and Society (CCS)

Year 1
Students are not permitted to change Language after Semester One of Year One.

The existing derogation for Year 4 of B.A. in Applied Language has been retained for Year 4 of the B.A. in Language for International Communication programme. Specifically:
The mark to be awarded for repeat modules is capped at a maximum of 40%. In the event of late submission without documentation, a penalty of 5% will be deducted from the mark for each week or part of a week. If the assignment is more than two weeks late, without documentation, the maximum possible mark will be 40%.
International Foundation Certificate (IFC)
Marks and Standards apply. Compensation will not apply to modules delivered on the IFC programmes.
Students are required to pass both Continuous Assessment and Examination components of the module FC002.
Students required to pass both oral and written components of the assessment for the following modules:

Graduate Diploma / MA in Translation studies (GTS/MTS)
Marks and Standards apply. Compensation is not allowed between modules delivered on the GTS programme.
Students are permitted to progress to the MA in Translation Studies following successful completion of a failed module providing that they have an overall precision mark of 55% and that they have attained a mark of 60 % or higher in Translation Theory. The mark to be awarded for repeat modules is capped at a maximum of 40% but the overall grade to be awarded to the student is that which corresponds to the precision mark obtained.
Graduate Diploma / MA in Intercultural Studies (GDIS/MAIS)
[Graduate Diploma] MA in Comparative Literature ([GDCL] MACL)
Marks and Standards apply. Compensation is not allowed for any modules delivered on the GDIS or MACL programmes.
Students are permitted to progress to the MAIS and MACL programmes following successful completion of a failed module. The mark to be awarded for repeat modules is capped at a maximum of 40% but the overall grade to be awarded to the student is that which corresponds to the precision mark obtained.
Graduate Diploma in Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (GDALIS)
Marks and Standards apply. Compensation will not apply for any modules delivered on the GDALIS programmes.
Graduate Certificate in Community Interpreting (GCCI)
Marks and Standards apply. Compensation will not apply to the following modules:

The following derogation applies with regard to module CM323 ‘Shorthand’ (for students on the 4 year degree programme only).
Students who pass Shorthand up to and including their 4th attempt are entitled to an Honours Degree. Students who have exhausted all four possible attempts to pass the Shorthand module may be deemed to have passed it by compensation at the discretion of the Progression and Award Board. However, the degree classification of students concerned will be capped at H3. The Progression and Award Board may at its discretion, award a degree capped at H3 to students who have completed all other elements of the four-year BA in Journalism programme and who request in writing to forgo any further attempts in Shorthand.

MSc in Education and Training Management (MEM)

Where a student repeats a module, the student’s overall mark in that module will be capped at 40%.
An award at Honours classification may be considered in circumstances where the candidate has availed of more than one attempt to pass a required Examination Module. However, such a decision remains at the discretion of the Programme Board.
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
Graduate Diploma in Education (GDED)
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
In order to progress from Year 1 to Year 2, students must attain a minimum of 40% in each taught module in Year 1.
Students who are awarded a failing grade in the Practice of Teaching modules must repeat the entire placement hours for that year and cannot progress to the following year or graduate.
Students are referred to the Guidelines on the Practice of Teaching as set out in the Graduate Diploma in Education Handbook.
Graduate Diploma / MA in Guidance and Counselling (GGC / MGC)
Compensation –
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
Guidance and Counselling Placement –
If a student fails to complete a placement, he/she will be unable to present for accreditation as a graduate of the programme.
Progression –
- In order to progress from Year 1 to Year 2, students must attain a minimum of 40% in each taught module in Year 1.
- Students must achieve an overall mark of 55% in the Graduate Diploma to be eligible to progress to the MSc.
Attendance -
- In accordance with section 3.1 (34) of Marks and Standards, a student will not be allowed to submit an examination in any year unless his/her course participation is satisfactory. Satisfactory course participation includes attendance at lectures and seminars to the order of at least 85% as well as the proper completion and presentation of course work such as research papers, assignments and continuous assessment.
- Further to item (i) above, full attendance (100%) will be mandatory in the following modules as they are skills based in focus and may have assessments directly linked to attendance.

ES532 Theory & Skills of Experiential Group Processes - Class attendance will be monitored, and on two occasions per semester attendance will be reviewed and students whose attendance is unsatisfactory will be approached by the programme chairperson or year coordinator. Students will be then informed that continued absence will lead to their not being allowed to submit the assessment for the module or modules concerned.

Marks and Standards apply. Where a module consists of a continuous assessment element and an examination element, students will not be required to pass both constituent elements of the module in order to be deemed to have passed, as long as an overall module mark of 40% is achieved.
