derogations engineering and computing 2007 - 2008

All Engineering Programmes

  • No minimum threshold applies to individual components of a module. A student is deemed to have passed a module if their overall result for the module is 40% or greater, regardless of the individual module component results.

All Engineering Undergraduate Programmes

  • Most modules are grouped in 4th year in the Schools of  Electronic Engineering &  Mechanical & Manufacturing undergraduate programmes. If a student's weighted average for the group is 40% or greater, he/she is deemed to have passed the group, regardless of the results of the individual modules within the group.

All Electronic Engineering Undergraduate Programmes

  • All electronic engineering undergraduate programmes have a third year contribution to the final award. This mark is the weighted average mark of the first full sitting of a student's third year exams, subject to a minimum of 40%. The third year contribution weighting is 10%.

All Mechanical & Manufacturing Undergraduate Programmes

  • All mechanical engineering programmes have both a second and third year contribution to the final award. These marks are calculated as specified in the previous paragraph. The second year contribution is 10% and third year is 15% on all mechanical programmes.  The shared programme (B.Eng. in Mechatronic Engineering) is also subject to this derogation.

Electronic Postgraduate Programmes

  • If a student fails a module and subsequently passes it, 40% is used for calculation of the overall result; 40% will also appear on the transcript/broadsheet.
  • A student may still be eligible for an Honours award despite having to repeat one or more modules.
  • The requirement to transfer from Graduate Diploma level to Masters level requires an average of 55% on 30 credits which should be achieved on the first attempt.

Mechanical Postgraduate Programmes

  • Students who compensate on a module are still eligible for an Honours award. In the case of compensated modules, a mark of 40% is used in the calculation of the overall result. A project mark cannot be compensated
  • If a student fails a module and subsequently passes it, a max of 55% is used for calculation of overall result. The actual mark the student obtains will appear on the transcript/broadsheet. A student may still be eligible for an Honours award despite having to repeat one or more modules.

CA Day

  • A student who fails up to two modules of the programme, but has an average mark over all modules that would entitle them to graduate, should be allowed to graduate, provided that:
  • No more than two modules have a mark of less than 40%
  • Neither module carries more than 5 ECTS credits

MSSF MSc in Security and Forensic Computing

  • If a student fails a module, the maximum mark achievable in the repeat exam(s) is 40%. However, a student may still be eligible for honours despite having to repeat one or more modules. If there is more than one repeat attempt at a module, students are only eligible for a pass award.

MBIO MSc in Bioinformatics

  • If a student fails a module, the maximum mark achievable in the repeat exam(s) is 40%. However, a student may still be eligible for honours despite having to repeat one or more modules. If there is more than one repeat attempt at a module, students are only eligible for a pass award.

GDF (P/T, F/T) Graduate Diploma in Information Technology

  • If a student fails a module, the maximum mark achievable in the repeat exams is 40% for calculation purposes. The actual mark that the student receives appears on the transcript/broadsheet. However, a student may still be eligible for honours despite having to repeat one or more modules.
