The following funding opportunities are now open:
A reminder to contract research staff and Principal Investigators (PIs) whose research has been interrupted due to the pandemic - the latest call for cost extension applications will close next Tuesday 23rd February at 5p.m. We are seeking applications from the following applicant categories:
- Contract research staff (defined as contract researchers on non-privately funded contracts and, in exceptional cases, research support staff employed directly on a project) whose research has been interrupted due to the pandemic, and whose current end date for their employment contract is between 1st July 2021 and 31st December 2021.
- Contract research staff who are already in receipt of HEA cost extension funding under Call 1, whose research has continued to be interrupted due to the pandemic. The new extension period should not overlap with the previous cost extension period.
- PIs whose research has been interrupted due to the original contract researcher moving on from the project during the pandemic.
All applicants must read the call document carefully in the first instance to ensure they are fully eligible to apply to this call. All relevant documentation, plus the link to the online application form can be found in the Currently Open Calls section of the Research Support website.
Each year, SCoTENS provides Seed Funding to support a number of collaborative research projects and professional activities in teacher education in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. To date, 121 research, conference and exchange projects have been funded. The sums allocated are usually in the region of £3,000 – £6,000 (approx. €3,750 – €7,500).
The SCoTENS committee is particularly keen to receive proposals from people who have not yet been partners in SCoTENS-funded projects. Applications from North-South partners who have co-facilitated workshops at SCoTENS Conferences and who are interested in deepening their engagement and scholarship are also encouraged.

The Einstein Foundation Award for Promoting Quality in Research is the first prize to recognize outstanding efforts that enhance the rigor, reliability, robustness, and transparency of research in the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. The Einstein Foundation will award up to €500,000 annually to stimulate awareness and activities fostering research quality and research integrity among scientists, institutions, funders, and politicians. The Einstein Foundation will honor successful candidates in the following three categories:
- Individuals: Individual researchers or small teams of collaborating researchers can be nominated. The laureate will be awarded €200,000.
- Institutions: Governmental and non-governmental organizations, institutions, or other entities can apply or be nominated. The award-winning organization or institution will receive €200,000. Successful governmental organizations or institutions will not receive any funds in addition to the award itself.
- Early Career Researchers: Early career researchers or small teams of collaborating researchers can submit a project proposal that seeks to foster research quality and value for an award of €100,000.
Eligibility and Requirements:
This award is open to any researcher or group of researchers, organizations, or institutions (from any part of the world) involved in science and research, education, and scholarship. To be eligible for the early career award, candidates must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience, and should have been an independent researcher for no longer than five years.
The deadline for submissions is 31st March 2021 (10:00 pm CET). The awardees will be announced in autumn 2021. For further information on the award and application process, please see here .

The Royal Irish Academy, together with the National Monuments Service, are pleased to invite applications for a new scheme which supports post-excavation research for Archaeological Research Excavations which were previously funded by the Royal Irish Academy and whose RIA excavation funding ended at least five years ago. Approximately €85,000 is available for Archaeology Research grants in this round of funding. The scheme will be competitive, and the maximum award available to a project under this round of funding is €30,000.
Who can apply
- This scheme is only open to post-excavation research for Archaeological Research Excavations which were previously funded by the Royal Irish Academy and whose RIA excavation funding ended at least five years ago, here termed RIA-funded Legacy Project.
- This scheme is not open to ‘legacy projects’ which were funded under the most recent AREG scheme (decisions December 2020).
- This scheme is open to archaeological researchers/archaeologists for work in the Republic of Ireland. Undergraduate, postgraduate students, or PhD candidates may not be the lead applicant but may be involved in an application.
- The Committee does not normally consider projects where the applicant is not the excavation licence holder (unless there are exceptional circumstances which will be examined on a case-by-case basis).

The Department of Justice invites tenders for research in the area of Behavioural Economics, how it could be applied in the Irish justice sector, how other jurisdictions have legislated for it and what lessons have been learnt. Behavioural Economics is a field that the Department would like to develop further to help introduce best practices into its day to day operations and policy decisions where possible. The research should be completed by the end of November 2021.

The Marine Institute continues to invest in the next generation of ocean professionals, through the 2021 Summer Bursary Scholarship Programme, which provides third level students with work experience across a number of marine areas.
The Bursary Scholarship Programme has been running for more than 30 years, providing essential career development and support, and inspiring the next generation of marine scientists and experts. The programme equips students with the skills to become ocean leaders and marine champions of the future, and is a key initiative of the Marine Institute's new Strategic Plan 2018-2022: Building Ocean Knowledge, Delivering Ocean Services.
The programme provides undergraduates a unique opportunity to meet fellow students from other third level colleges as well as work with experts in their field helping them form a future network in the marine sector.
The Bursary Scholarship Programme is aimed at undergraduates of Universities, Institutes of Technology and National Institutes for Higher Education. To participate in the programme, undergraduate students must have completed two years of study in a relevant discipline by the beginning of June 2021.
"The Bursary Scholarship Programme offers opportunities for undergraduate students to strengthen their skills and knowledge in relation the marine sector. The programme enables students to make informed decisions early in their studies about the marine and maritime careers they would like to pursue," said Patricia Orme, Director of Corporate Services at the Marine Institute.
In 2021, the Bursary Programme will offer 8 to 12 week placements for up to 11 undergraduate students. The programme offers students practical experience in exciting areas such as Freshwater Fisheries, Salmon scale archiving, Aquaculture, Oceanography data sets, Marine Infrastructure Asset Management, Finance, Human resources and Marine Communications. The bursaries are based at the Marine Institute facilities in Oranmore, Galway and Newport, Co. Mayo.
Successful students will receive a scholarship worth €275 per week, for the duration of the work placement.

The Irish Cancer Society is now accepting applications for their Summer Studentships 2021.

Information on the award
The objective of the Irish Cancer Society Summer Studentships is to offer excellent undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a cancer research project and to work with researchers in high-quality research environments. This programme will give students the opportunity to gain research experience at an early stage in their career path.
There are four summer studentship awards available: two translational biomedical science summer studentships and two social, nursing, and allied health sciences summer studentships. Applicants can only apply for one type of studentship award.
The Translational Research Summer Studentship 2021 programme offers undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a translational biomedical cancer research project. This programme is open to students undertaking a biomedical or life science degree.
The Social, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences Summer Studentships 2021 programme offers undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake a social, nursing and allied health sciences-based cancer research project. This programme is open to students undertaking a degree in the social, nursing, or allied health sciences.
The total amount available is €2,500 to support the student for a maximum period of eight weeks, starting no earlier than 2nd June. Payment to the student throughout the project will be made through the host institution.
Please note that this programme is subject to the evolving Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. In response to this, ‘virtual’, or ‘desk-based’, projects will be eligible, once said project fits all other eligibility criteria. All on-site summer studentships will be subject to the current health guidelines in place in Ireland at that time.

The Irish Cancer Society is now accepting Expression of Interest applications for the Translation Research Fellowship Scheme 2021.
Applications can be made through the Irish Cancer Society Online Grant System.
Deadline for Expression of Interest applications: 3pm Wednesday 3rd March 2021.
The objective of the Irish Cancer Society Translational Research Fellowship Scheme 2021 is to support excellent early-stage (0-4 years’ experience post-PhD) cancer researchers to develop as independent researchers in their chosen area of translational biomedical cancer research. It is expected that the successful fellow will plan on pursuing a long-term career in academic research.
The maximum funding granted for a Fellowship is €235,000 over three years. A mandatory provision of €1,000 is included within this budget to support Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) in the proposed research project.
An additional mobility/capacity building funding of up to a maximum of €5,000 will be available.

The Irish Cancer Society is currently accepting applications to its Social, Nursing, and Allied Health Research Scholarship 2021.
The objective of this scholarship is to offer excellent social, nursing, and allied health sciences graduates the opportunity to undertake postgraduate training in cancer research.
A number of changes have been made for the 2021 Social, Nursing, and Allied Health Research Scholarship:
· The Mobility Element has been adapted in recognition that extended travel is not always possible. It has been replaced with a Mobility and Capacity Building Element.
· Part-time PhDs are now available for nursing and allied health applicants who will hold a concurrent clinical post during the course of the PhD.
· Nursing and allied health professionals who will be taking time away from their professional clinical role may apply for a stipend in line with IUA rates and inclusive of PRSI and employer pension contributions.

The Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance, JPIAMR is launching an international Call for proposals under the umbrella of the JPIAMR and within the framework of the ERA-NET JPIAMR-ACTION. The Interventions and transmission call 2021 (jpiamr.eu), with financial support from the European Commission, includes 30 funding organisations from 21 JPIAMR member countries.
The Call “One Health interventions to prevent or reduce the development and transmission of AMR” has a two-step procedure with deadlines as follows:
16th March 2021 (12.00 CET) – Deadline pre-proposals
12th July 2021 – Deadline full proposals
This afternoon at 15.00 CET there will be a webinar for all interested parties during which the Call will be presented and the Funders will address queries.
The webinar will also be live on Facebook, www.facebook.com/jpiamr, and will be recorded and published on the JPIAMR YouTube channel .

The DAFM national research call is currently open, with an extended closing date of 12:00 on 9th March 2021. This is the first call under a restructured approach to research funding, seeking projects across key thematic areas including climate and biodiversity; sustainable animal and plant health and production; agri-digitalisation and the bioeconomy; and safe, healthy food production and processing.
