The following funding opportunities are now open:
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) invites eligible Irish Research Performing Organisations (RPOs) to submit joint research proposals under the Joint Call on Circularity in mixed crop and livestock farming systems, with an emphasis on greenhouse gas mitigation.
This is a single stage competitive submission process with a deadline for the submission of proposals by 26th May 2021 (15:00 CEST). Projects are expected to start late 2021.
The primary purpose of the Call is to promote research proposals on (re-) integration of crop and livestock farming systems with the aim to enhance circularity between these systems and thereby improve the sustainability of farms and the mitigation of greenhouse gasses from agriculture.
The ERANET Joint Call documentation and the electronic submission system for applicants are available here. Proposals must be submitted via the electronic submission system.
Irish applicants must read the ‘Guidelines for Irish Applicants’ in conjunction with the ERANET Joint Call Documentation, including the requirements set out in the National Annex for Ireland. The ‘Guidelines for Irish Applicants’ is available here.

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue T.D., has issued a call for proposals for Food Waste Reduction Initiatives under the 2021 Rural Innovation and Development Fund.
Minister McConalogue said “This funding will further enhance the work previously funded to identify, target and address what is a rapidly growing issue not just here in Ireland but globally. Ireland generates over 1 million tonnes of food waste each year. These initiatives will serve to address that fund’s overall objective of energising the rural economy by encouraging innovative job creation and sustainable enterprise development. In this current climate with such difficult times, it is more important than ever that we support and promote these important initiatives."
The Call for Proposals relates to the provision of services for the support of food waste reduction projects which are designed to reduce food waste generated by food businesses, retailers/wholesalers or suppliers in rural areas. The deadline for submission of applications is 12:00 (noon) on 14th April 2021. Proposals will be assessed through a competitive process for funding of proposed projects.
Total funding available is €180,000 for proposals relating to the promotion and/or development of innovative food waste reduction projects which are designed to reduce food waste generated in rural areas. The maximum amount that will be paid to any project is €60,000 (excl VAT). Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis.
Applications should be made via the Call for Proposals application form which is available here.

The HRB will be launching the second round of the Secondary Data Analysis Projects (SDAP 2021) on the 29th March 2021 (subject to board approval).
Aligned with the objectives set out in the HRB Strategy 2021-2025, this scheme will enable the use of data to shape health policy, enhance healthcare delivery, and drive broader research and innovation initiatives. As part of this objective, the specific action to ‘Invest in research projects which employ secondary data analysis and record linkage’ was identified as being essential to support this.
The awards will support proposals typically between 18-24 months duration where the findings from the research will have direct relevance to policy and/or practice in the Irish health and social care system. This should involve close collaboration of researchers with non-academic stakeholders (policy makers and data controllers). The proposed research should be explicitly linked to the documented evidence needs of the knowledge user organisation. The HRB recognise that some data sets are not currently in an accessible format. Therefore, they strongly welcome projects that include the development of tools to make data sets accessible and/or more widely available (e.g. through the creation of a published data dictionary or the development of models that may be used more widely). In these cases, the duration of the award may be up to 36 months, with up to 12 months dedicated to the development of such tools.
Proposals must include at least one existing Irish or International dataset in order to be eligible for this call. Applications may be related to, but must be distinct from, the specific aims of the original data collection.
Funding will be up to a maximum of €250,000 per award.
Who should apply?
Applications should be made on behalf of a team made up of researchers, knowledge users and data controllers/processors.
Main Changes from last round
• Data Controllers/processors should be named as Co-applicants where justified by their level of involvement otherwise they should be named as collaborators.
• Applications will undergo Public Review in parallel to International Peer Review.
Deadline
The closing date for applications is Friday 28th May 2021 at 1pm.
