The AXA Post-Doc 2022 Campaign has been launched. The topic of this ‘Call for Proposals | Call for Decade Actions’ is “Towards more resilient Coastal Livelihoods”. Postdoctoral researchers working on coastal livelihoods and the associated environmental, economic, social, geopolitical issues will be supported.
DCU are only allowed to submit one Expression of Interest. Please submit an internal expression of interest (EoI) to kieran.odwyer@dcu.ie containing the applicant name, a short CV and a lay abstract of the proposed project (250 words max) before Monday the 25th October at 5pm. Prior to submitting an EoI please ensure you have your Head of School approval. Submitted EoI’s will be reviewed internally to ensure eligibility and competitiveness. The HRB have launched their HRB Postdoctoral Internship Programme 2021/2022. The Programme aims to provide early career researchers with a recent PhD or MSc the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of working in a state agency, alongside experienced research management professionals. The duration of the in internship is 24 months and the HRB Post-doctoral Interns will rotate between two out of three HRB business areas for a 12-month period each. The Science Foundation Ireland St Patrick’s Day Science Medal is awarded annually to a distinguished scientist, engineer or technology leader living and working in the USA with strong Irish connections. Running since 2014, the competition was further developed in 2016 to include a specific award for an industry leader. Both the industry and academic medals recognize individuals who are not only outstanding in their fields of expertise but who also have demonstrably assisted researchers in Ireland in either academia or industry – via mentorship, supervision, collaboration, industrial development, entrepreneurship or who have made significant contributions to developing the research ecosystem in Ireland. Nominations must be submitted by 5pm (Dublin local time) on Friday 5th November 2021. More information on the nomination procedure and review process is available here.

The 2022-2023 Fulbright Irish Awards programme are open, with an application deadline of October 29th at 4pm. The Fulbright Awards provide grants for Irish citizens, and E.U. citizens resident in the Republic of Ireland for 3+ years, to research, study, or lecture in the USA. The National Disability Authority Research Promotion Scheme 2021-22 is now open for applications. The focus of research topics for this year is: ‘Assistive Products and Consumer Products that support choice and control for Persons with Disabilities’. The NDA, subject to funding, operates a Research Promotion Scheme every two years. The purpose of the funding scheme is to deliver pieces of quality new research on specific themes. Proposals for research projects under the Scheme are open to research institutions, service providers, organisations of persons with disabilities and disability advocacy groups, and following assessment, those projects which are successful to be funded are identified.
The total funding envelope for this call is €75,000 and NDA anticipates awarding up to three grants and are open to individual grant applications that are for varying amounts between €15,000 and €40,000. The Health Research Charities Ireland/Health Research Board Joint Funding Scheme is currently open. Through this scheme, HRCI member charities run calls for health and social care research of importance to the people they represent. Research projects of 12-36 months duration, up to a max of €300,000 are supported.
Charities currently with open calls include CFNCRF, Epilepsy Ireland, Rett Syndrome Ireland and the Irish Thoratic Society. The individual deadlines for these calls (some for Expressions of Interest and others for submission of full applications) run from 21st October to 10th November 2021.

This is a reminder that the COALESCE (Collaborative Alliances for Societal Challenges) 2021 call will be closing on the 23rd of November 2021. The call document, guidance and other materials are available on the COALESCE website. The IRC have also released their initial FAQ document, which can be found here. If you are looking to apply for this call and/or if you have any questions, please contact me at adam.platt@dcu.ie.
Please note that the TORA deadline for this call will be the 15th of November 2021. Applicants will need to upload their final budget and their most current version of the proposal to TORA by this date. Applicants are encouraged to upload their final applications on the IRC SmartSimple Portal by Friday the 19th of November, to avoid any issues that may arise in the system due to the high volume of applications expected by IRC.

The EU4Health has a number of funding opportunities currently open for researchers. These include:
- Tenders in relation to preparatory actions to support the establishment of the new Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA). Deadline 29th October 2021.
- Prizes for initiatives in the areas of cancer prevention and mental health. Deadline 30th November 2021.
- Action grants, covering topics such as health data, healthy lifestyles, mental health, cancer and genomics. Call deadline 25th January 2022.
The HRB will host an information session in the first week of November to explain more about the funding opportunities and provide a better understanding of EU4Health. The 2022 IRC Enterprise Partnership Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme will launch on Thursday 21st October 2021 with a deadline of 2nd December 2021.
The Enterprise Partnership Scheme is a unique national initiative linking excellent researchers in all disciplines to enterprise. In the context of these calls, enterprise partners can range from multinational corporations to SMEs, non-governmental organisations, and, where justified, public-sector agencies. The award will support suitably qualified postdoctoral candidates intending to pursue full-time research in any discipline for two years.
The fellowship comprises of:
- a salary of €39,132 in the first year of the award and €39,686 in the second year of the award*;
- employer’s PRSI contribution; and
- eligible direct research expenses of €5,000 per annum.
The enterprise partner is expected to commit €16,152 in the first year of the award and €16,357 in the second year of the award towards the cost of funding the researcher. The Irish Research Council contributes the remaining funds. Eligible NGOs can request a fee waiver in respect of their contribution for the first year of the award. The Enterprise partners can either be based nationally and internationally.

The IRC in collaboration with HRB and EPA will launch the new H2020 MSCA DOROTHY COFUND programme by the end of 2021.
It is a great opportunity for prospective postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines (Humanities, Social Sciences and STEM) to apply, provided that their research relates to public health crises. All grants will last 36 months, 18 abroad months (outgoing phase) and 18 months back in Ireland (return phase). Researchers from all nationalities, based within and beyond Ireland, are fully eligible to apply.
Interested candidates should also start the process of securing two mentors, based respectively in an Irish and International Higher Education Institute, as soon as feasible. Applicants will also have the option to include a secondment at proposal stage, either finding a suitable host independently or availing of one via a list made available by the Council (forthcoming).
IRC will publish the application templates over the next few weeks, but please be informed that the proposal will be largely based on the MSCA Global Postdoctoral Fellowship. For further information, please refer to the pre-call notice on IRC’s website.

As a partner in the ECIU University, DCU is delighted to relaunch the Research Mobility Fund (RMF) which offers grants of up to €5,000 to support research exchanges and visits within the ECIU network. Participants may apply for travel and associated costs to visit ECIU member institutions for activities that include the development and strengthening of collaborations, participation in specific training activities, accessing research infrastructures and sharing of best practices.
The RMF is an internal rolling call open to all DCU researchers, PhD students and research support staff. Participants from all disciplines are welcome to apply, with preference given to applications focused on activities relating to UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) in line with the ECIU long-term research strategy.

The IRC Ulyses 2021 call is open at the moment and the deadline for applications is the 20th of January 2022.
This year selected research projects will also be supported by the following strategic partners:
- Electricity transmission system operator EirGrid will partner with French-based Réseau de Transport d’Électricité to support suitably aligned research projects in the area of renewable energies and smart grids.
- The Health Research Board will support research projects focusing on patient-oriented and clinical research, population health or health services research.
- The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and ADEME, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency, will provide support to research projects exploring topics relating to energies.
Awards will be up to a maximum of €2,500 each to Irish-and French-based research partner(s) to cover travel and living expenses.

The EU Horizon Europe 2022 Health calls opened on 6th October with a budget of over €900 million. The 2022 calls include both single and two stage applications.
- Single stage calls close on 21st April 2022.
- The first stage of the two stage calls close on 1st February 2022 with a final closing date for the 2nd stage on 6th September 2022.
The proposal for the first stage is 10 pages long. To give you a sense of what it required, here is a link to the Proposal Template for Stage 1. This can also be downloaded when you start the submission process.
