HSE National Screening Service Award

Congratulations to Dr Kumaresan Cithambaram, Dr Sean Healy, Dr Liz Hartnett and Dr Deirdre Corby, School of Nursing, Psychotherapy and Community Health, who have been awarded funding from the HSE National Screening Service to carry out a needs assessment with disabled people accessing screening services.

As part of this work, the team will:

• Document the size and demographics of the disabled population invited for screening in Ireland;
• Explore the current level of data captured in NSS on disabled people;
• Review the health issues affecting disabled people as applied to screening services i.e. breast, cervical bowel cancer and diabetes;
• Identify barriers and facilitators experienced by disabled people accessing screening;
• Consult with disabled people on their experience of screening;
• Consult with carers, family members and health professionals on their requirements to support disabled people to avail of screening;
• Provide recommendations for NSS based on findings.
