Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) has now opened its research grant call for the SFI Frontiers for the Future Programme – Awards (SFI FFP-Awards).
The SFI FFP-Awards grant call allows for request of a larger budget and longer duration relative to the SFI FFP-Projects grant stream. Eligible applicants have the option to apply as an Emerging Investigator applicant, where evaluation emphasises the quality of the research proposal over the track record of the applicant. This provides both emerging and established independent researchers with an opportunity to develop innovative, collaborative and excellent research programmes.
The legal remit of SFI is to promote, develop and assist the carrying out of oriented basic and applied research in strategic areas of scientific endeavour that concern the future development and competitiveness of industry and enterprise in the State. Accordingly, SFI will accept applications that are aligned to one or more of the 14 refreshed priority areas that fall within 6 broad Enterprise themes (ICT, Health, Food, Energy, climate action and sustainability, Manufacturing and materials, Services and business processes).
Full grant call details can be found in the SFI FFP call document.

The 2023 SFI Research Infrastructure Programme is scheduled to launch mid-May 2023 and will be very similar to the 2021 call.
As the budget for the programme is limited, there will be a cap on the number of proposals permitted from each Research Body (a maximum of 6 proposals each). As such, an Expression of Interest (EOI) document will be required prior to the submission of the full proposals, as per the 2021 Programme.
Two deadlines will be provided upon the launch of the call documentation:
- The first deadline for an Expression of Interest submission (in the form of an email with an indicative proposal title, lead applicant, list of collaborating Research bodies, abstract and keywords) is likely to be the 1pm 23rd June 2023.
- The second deadline for full-proposal submission through SESAME is likely to be 1pm 28th July 2023. All dates are subject to change.
There will be a DCU Expression of Interest selection process to select the six EoI’s to be submitted on behalf of DCU. This process will be confirmed once the call has been launched.
Contact: Those interested in submitting an EoI should contact Kieran O’Dwyer at kieran.odwyer@dcu.ie
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) Postdoctoral fellowship scheme is currently open. The scheme supports excellent researchers in developing their careers and fosters excellence in research. The Postdoctoral Fellowships (PFs) action targets researchers holding a PhD who wish to carry out their research activities abroad, acquire new skills and develop their careers. PFs help researchers gain experience in other countries, disciplines and non-academic sectors.
There are 2 types of fellowships:
- European Postdoctoral Fellowships: They are open to researchers moving within Europe or coming to Europe from another part of the world to pursue their research career. These fellowships take place in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country and can last between 1 and 2 years. Researchers of any nationality can apply.
- Global Postdoctoral Fellowships: They fund the mobility of researchers outside Europe. The fellowship lasts between 2 to 3 years, of which the first 1 to 2 years will be spent in a non-associated Third Country, followed by a mandatory return phase of 1 year to an organisation based in an EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country. Only nationals or long-term residents of the EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries can apply.
The application deadline is 4pm on 13th September 2023. Please note that the TORA deadline is 30th August 2023.
