Congratulations to all the students and their supervisors who were awarded funding to carry out research projects over the summer. There was great success with these applications across several funders.
These awards are a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate students, allowing them to complete a short research project during the summer. The aim of many of the schemes is to encourage an interest in research and give students an opportunity to become familiar with research techniques. Previous awardees have spoken about how much they’ve enjoyed the experience and how beneficial it was for developing their CV’s and positioning them for postgraduate scholarships.

Congratulations to DCU awardees of SFI Frontiers for the Future 2021 call:
1) Prof. Gabriel Muntean (School of Electronic Engineering/INSIGHT) "Framework for Performance-aware Differentiated Innovative Services in 5G and Beyond Networks (FRADIS)" ;
2) Prof. Robert Forster (School of Chemical Sciences/NCSR) "WIREFREE ELECTROCEUTICALS: 3D Electrical and Electrochemical Stimulation of Cells";
3) Dr Mingming Liu (School of Electronic Engineering/INSIGHT) "Electric Shared-mobility Services to Empower Next-generation Transportation for Ireland’s Ambition to reach a Low-carbon future (ESSENTIAL)";
4) Dr Kieran Nolan (School of Chemical Sciences) "Green Chemistry Biocatalysis (Genesis)" (DCU is co-lead, TUD is lead)
These awards will enable DCU awardees to contribute new excellent and innovative knowledge, while also solving problems faced by our society such as the need for capable, smart and efficient 5G networks for important but diverse needs; the potential of wireless technologies for the treatment of conditions such as Parkinson’s, chronic pain and epilepsy; the capacity to use AI help us model the needs of shared mobility schemes to reduce carbon impacts form transport while meeting user needs; and the emerging potential of enzymes in Green Chemistry applications.

Congratulations to DCU awardees of the SEAI RD&D 2022 call:
1) Dr Mary Pryce (School of Chemical Sciences) "Using Digital Financing for R&D Investment in Solar Hydrogen Production; A Case Study Approach";
2) Dr Brian Corcoran and Dr Greg McNamara (School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) "The economic, environmental and social feasibility of implementing gravitational energy storage systems in Ireland";
3) Dr Brian Corcoran and Dr Reihaneh Aghamolaei (School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering) "Enabling interdisciplinary analysis for whole life-cycle residential renovation (ENABLE)" (project led by UCD)
The awarded projects will be working on the innovative and interdisciplinary solutions to Ireland’s energy needs, while supporting policy with cutting-edge research outputs and ultimately accelerating Ireland’s clean energy transition.
