Biography

Susan works in Geography Teacher Education at DCU's Institute of Education. She also contributes to a range of other areas including early childhood education, as well as Masters options in Climate Change Education and Poverty and Social Inclusion in Education. Susan is a member of a number of DCU centres: the Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship, Disadvantage Centre and the Water Institute.

Susan is President of the Geographical Association (GA), sitting on Governing Body as a Trustee. She also chairs the GA's Education Group, made up of all the Associations Phase Committees and Specials Interest Groups. She is Secretary of the GA's Early Years and Primary Committee and regularly writes for the GA's journal Primary Geography.

Susan is an External Examiner at the Universities of Roehampton (PGCE, Roehampton) and Chichester (BA Outdoor Learning, Colaiste Dhulaigh).

Susan is a member of the Geography Education Research Collective (GERECO), and is on the Editorial Board of the International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education (IRGEE). Susan's own research interests span teacher education and education at all levels. She has a particular interest in critical approaches to places and spaces in geography education. Current projects include the Science Foundation Ireland Irish Sign Language (ISL) Glossary for Geography & Environmental Science, WaterWonders and work on the scope of geography fieldwork in inclusive education.

Susan's main research interests are in the teaching and learning of geography, specifically children's capabilities, digital technologies and the process of enquiry. She also researches in teacher education, including work on first-in-family teachers.
