Biography

Rowan Oberman is a lecturer and researcher in Development, Intercultural, Human Rights and Citizenship Education at DCU Institute of Education, St Patrick’s Campus, Drumcondra. She is a qualified Barrister with particular expertise in human rights and family law. She has considerable experience in global citizenship education in both formal and informal education contexts. She has developed numerous educational resources. Her most recent publication is Creating Futures, an online resource providing innovative climate change lessons for senior primary classrooms. Her research areas of interest include children’s rights, climate change education, global citizenship education and critical literacy. She lectures on BECE, BEd, PME and MEd programmes in global citizenship education. She is chair of the Global School advisory committee.

Research Interests

Rowan research areas of interest include: children's rights, human rights education, climate change education and global citizenship education. She has considerable research experience including experience in working with children, student teachers, teachers, teacher educators and vulnerable groups. She is currently leading on several research projects including:  research investigating the impact of a climate change education intervention in senior primary classes; research exploring young children's engagement with issues of global justice and research on the inclusion rights of Traveller children in teacher education. She was also lead researcher on a research project investigating children’s engagement with issues of global justice reported in Oberman, R., O’Shea, F., Hickey, B., Joyce, C., (2014). Children’s Global Thinking. Dublin: Education for a Just World.  Other research experience includes qualitative and mixed methods studies in the areas of human rights education, climate change education, teacher education, global citizenship education and refugee housing.

Teaching Interests

Rowan teaches Global Citizenship Education in compulsory and specialism courses. Her teaching models the interactive, explorative approaches she encouraged her students to use in the classroom. Reflecting the theory of Global Citizenship Education, she endeavours for her students to think, experience, feel and reflect during courses as well as to increase their knowledge. Rowan's courses encourage group work and discussion and create spaces for considering different perspectives and approaches.
