Biography

Dr. John Connolly is an Assistant Professor in Geography at Dublin City University and leads the DCU Geospatial Research Group. He joined DCU in 2015 and teaches environmental/physical geography and GIS at both undergraduate (B.A.) and postgraduate (M.Sc.) levels. He is the Principal Investigator of the EPA funded iHabiMap project (2019 - 2023), a CO-PI on the EPA funded SmartBog project (2019-2023) and CO-PI on the DAFM funded GENENET project (starting in 2020). His research is focused on using GIS and Earth Observation to study terrestrial carbon dynamics  and land use change in Temperate, Boreal and Arctic peatlands and currently collaborates with colleagues in Germany, the UK, Sweden and Canada. He leads the SFI funded Enable SolarMap project focused on mapping solar potential in urban areas. He is the 2019 recipient of the Boston University/DCU Fellowship and was invited to join the BU led GLanCE Global land cover mapping and estimation project as an international collaborator.

John has co-ordinated several research proposals at national (EPA & DAFM - PI and Co-PI), international (FP7 - Marie Curie IEF and H2020 - Coordinator) and Industry (Google Earth Engine - PI). He has an extensive network of collaborators across Europe (UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and France) as well as in the USA and Canada. He is on the management committee of the SENSECO COST Action.

John's undergraduate in Geography (B. A. International - UCD) has paved the way for Geographical research in arid areas in Morocco and Tunisia (M.Sc. in Geography at Sheffield University), the study of peatlands in Ireland and Canada using GIS and remote sensing (PhD. Agriculture - UCD); Land use on peatlands and peatland degradation across Ireland (EPA postdoctoral post and EPA Research Fellowship) and permafrost degradation and carbon dynamics across the Arctic (Marie Curie IEF).

He is interested in supervising PhD students with interests in applied GIS and Earth Observation under the following themes
 - Land use and land use change (particularly in relation to Peatland / Agriculture and carbon dynamics)
 - Landscape carbon dynamics, Detecting and mapping peatlands and peatland degradation
 - Mapping the historical extent of Irish Peatlands and loss of carbon store
 - Ecosystem Services in natural environments
 - Solar mapping in urban areas
 - Permafrost degradation in the Arctic
