Biography

Dr Orla Kelly is a Lecturer in Social, Environmental and Scientific Education. Her main teaching responsibilities are for science education and local studies on the BEd and PME primary programmes. With research expertise and a strong publication record in the area of science education, and recent publications on creativity in primary science and education for sustainability through science, she has a growing international reputation in this area. She also has had success with securing funding from the Global Consortium for Sustainability Outcomes. She also has a developing profile in outdoor learning.

She is the DCU Management Committee representative on the Irish Aid funded DICE project. She is the DCU Institute of Education representative on the newly established DCU Sustainability Council. She is also Research Ethics Advisor for the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies. She is also the secretary for the Royal Society of Chemistry Education Division Ireland Region Committee.

Outreach Activities

  Year Engagement Type Organisation Description

Presentation as part of the Cavan and Monaghan Science Festival entitled Creative Approaches to Primary Science in Monaghan Education Centre. From puppets to play and from stories to sustainability this hands-on workshop will explore a range of creative and inquiry based approaches to teaching and learning in primary science. There will be an opportunity to try out some of the suggested approaches and to discuss their suitability for your own practice. This research informed workshop will also give insights to the theory underpinning these approaches.
