Background:
Ph.D. awarded by National University of Ireland on 'Synthesis and Structure of derivatives of the octachlorodirhenate dianion'. Postdoctoral research in X-ray diffraction studies and chemical synthesis at the University of Guelph, Canada (1990-1993) and an EU Human Capital & Mobility Fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK (1993-1995).

Current research interests: synthesis and structural systematics of benzamides; carbamates and imides; macrocycles and oligomer imides; Trezimides and Tennimides. Recent papers include halogen bonding studies and the importance of weak interactions in influencing crystal structure formation. International research lectures and presentations/workshops (by invitation) in Brazil, France, Oman and India (2013-2023). Research visits to China as a Visiting Professor to Lanzhou University, Gansu, PRC in May 2024 and June 2025.
Biopharmaceutical, Biotechnology & Health theme coordinator for Research Brazil Ireland under an SFI-funded mobility initiative. Sabbatical leave as a Visiting Professor (2015-2016) at CRM-2, University of Lorraine, Nancy, France. Visiting Professorship award for 2022 at the FST and CRM-2, University of Lorraine, Nancy.

Description
Visiting Professorship to the University of Lorraine, Nancy, France in June/July 2022 to conduct research, promote international research collaborations and write research papers.
Two week research visits to UNICAMP, Campinas, SP, Brazil and UFABC, Sao Paulo as well as UNESC, Santa Catarina, Brazil to promote research and student exchanges in the Chemical Sciences. The research visits included research and general talks, consultancy and visits to Industrial and Water facilities. Consultancy work to promote the local Sao Paulo Water institute based in Campinas.
Visiting Professorship at the University of Lorraine (2015-2018). A research sabbatical leave at the CRM-2 department (Physics), University of Lorraine, France (2015-2016) and collaborating with Professor E. Aubert, Professor E. Espinosa, Professor C. Jelsch and Professor B. Guillot in the area of structural systematics, charge density studies and computational chemistry.
A one year sabbatical leave in the Structural Biology & Biochemistry Department at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto Canada from June 2004 to July 2005
A meeting dedicated to the late Dr. Colin J. Barnes (School of Chemical Sciences) and organised by the members of the School in conjunction with Dr. Ehab Alshaimeleh and Dr. Tony Cafolla.
A one-day meeting in honour of Professor George Ferguson (Canada) held in DCU. Seven speakers gave an excellent range of talks on chemistry and crystallography including John Low (Dundee & Aberdeen), Pat McArdle (Galway), Des Cunningham (Galway), Trevor Spalding (Cork), Malachy McCann (Maynooth), Volker Bohmer (Mainz), Sean Conway (IUCr, Chester) and Gillian Holmes (IUCr, Chester).
