Kevin Rafter is Full Professor of Political Communication at DCU's School of Communications. He has published extensively on Irish politics and media in leading academic journals and as the author/editor of over a dozen books.  He will be a Fulbright Professor at Boston College in 2024.

Kevin’s contribution to Irish public life includes chairing national bodies and taskforces on civil service reform, and broadcast and legal regulation, as well as facilitating government formation negotiations as an independent rapporteur in 2016.  He is a qualified Chartered Director and was previously Chair of Compliance Committee of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (Media Commission), a board member of Dublin Bus, the Galway International Arts Festival and Oxfam Ireland as well as Chair of Culture Ireland, the state agency for promoting Irish art globally. Kevin has qualifications in economics [BA(Mod; MLitt], politics [MA; PhD] and in corporate law and governance from the Law Society of Ireland and the Institute of Directors. He was appointed Chair of the Arts Council of Ireland in June 2019 and doing his term the organisation's annual budget increased from €75m to €134m.

Kevin's research expertise in Irish politics includes a focus on political journalism, political advertising, the President of Ireland and media coverage of elections. He has written several political biographies and party histories.  His research has been published in over sixty book chapters and leading academic journals including Press/PoliticsEuropean Journal of CommunicationJournalismJournalism StudiesMedia History and Irish Political Studies. He is a member of the editorial boards of Administration and Journalism Practice, and has edited special editions of both journals as well as The Irish Review.

Recent books include Taoisigh and the Arts (2022) and Resilient Reporting: Media Coverage of Irish Elections since 1969 (2022pb).  Taoisigh and the Arts looked afresh at major political figures in post-1922 Ireland through the  work of writers and visual artists. It also examined the legacy of national leaders and considered the priority these politicians placed on the arts during their time in office. Taoisigh and the Arts was described as ‘consistently entertaining and informative’ in the Dublin Review of Books and as ‘a gripping history of the State’s treatment of artists and writers’ in the Irish Independent. A review in Books Ireland said it ‘should be in the in-tray of all Irish politicians.’

He has recently completed a biography of E. J. Dillon (1854-1933), a special correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, and is currently working on a study of the politics of Ireland in the 1980s.

Since joining DCU in 2010, he has been Head of the School of Communications (2017-2021), Associate Dean for Research (2012-16) and Chairperson of the MA Political Communication programme (2010-present). From 2008 to 2010 he was Head of the Department of Film and Media at the National Film School, IADT, Dun Laoghaire.

Prior to 2008, Kevin worked as a senior political journalist in Dublin covering general elections in 1997, 2002 and 2007 as well as the peace process in Northern Ireland. Best known as a presenter of the This Week radio programme for RTÉ News & Current Affairs, he held senior editorial positions with the Irish Times (political reporter), the Sunday Times (political correspondent), Sunday Tribune (political editor/assistant editor) and Magill magazine (editor). As well as politics in Ireland, his journalism also included elections in the United Kingdom and Germany and foreign news events in Malawi, Tanzania, the Beslan School massacre and the death of Pope John Paul II. His media work was acknowledged with a European Journalism Award and at the Celtic Media Festival.
